Why people go

Dubai swings between two moods in the same day: Downtown Dubai's Burj Khalifa (the world's tallest building at 828 m) and Dubai Mall sit a short drive from the Dubai Creek, Old Dubai's abras (water taxis) and the Gold and Spice Souks. A desert safari — dune bashing, sandboarding, camel rides and a BBQ camp — is the other essential half of a first Dubai trip. Many visitors also add a day trip to Abu Dhabi, about 90 minutes away, for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Yas Island's theme parks.
