The Maldives is organised around Male, its capital and main airport, with resorts spread across some two dozen atolls. North and South Male atolls suit shorter trips because of quick speedboat transfers; Ari and Baa atolls are favoured for diving and manta-ray/whale-shark encounters further from the capital. Most resort islands offer overwater villas with direct steps into the lagoon, snorkelling straight off the deck, and separate excursions to house reefs and channels for turtles and rays.

Every Indian passport holder is granted a free 30-day visa on arrival, with no advance application or fee. The one mandatory step is the online IMUGA Traveller Declaration, to be completed within 96 hours before arrival, covering passport and flight details, accommodation address and health declarations. The visa on arrival can be extended, with approval, up to a total stay of 90 days. A passport valid at least one month beyond the stay is the legal minimum, though six months' validity is recommended.

Getting there
Velana International Airport (Male) is reached from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kochi; the shortest routes are from South India (Kochi around 1.5 hours, Chennai around 3.5 hours); onward transfer to most resorts is by speedboat or seaplane.
