Hanoi's Old Quarter, centred on Hoan Kiem Lake, is a maze of 36 streets each historically tied to a trade, still lively with markets and street food. Ha Long Bay, about a four-hour drive or cruise from Hanoi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 1994 and extended in 2000) famed for over 1,600 limestone karst islands rising from emerald water.

Further south, Hoi An's Ancient Town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 — preserves timber-frame merchant houses from its centuries as a trading port between Asian and European merchants. It sits about 30 km south of Da Nang, the region's main airport gateway.

When to go
October to April for Hanoi/Ha Long Bay (cooler, drier); February to July tends to be driest around Hoi An/Da Nang — check seasonal typhoon risk (roughly September–November) before booking.

Fly into Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi) for the north, or Da Nang International Airport for Hoi An/Ha Long day trips from central Vietnam; Ha Long Bay is about a 3–4 hour drive from Hanoi.
