Why people go

Most first trips to Japan run Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka, with a Mount Fuji detour in between. Tokyo mixes ultra-modern districts like Shibuya and Shinjuku with traditional Asakusa; Kyoto is the temple city, with Kiyomizu-dera, Fushimi Inari's torii-gate trails and the Philosopher's Path all showing best in spring blossom or autumn colour; Osaka adds Osaka Castle, Dotonbori's food streets and easy access to Universal Studios Japan. The Fuji Five Lakes region, reached from Tokyo, gives classic views of the volcano, with the climbing season running roughly July to mid-September.

Japan has no visa-exemption agreement with India, no visa-on-arrival and no true online e-visa for Indian tourists as of 2026: applicants still submit documents in person at a VFS Japan visa centre, though the approved visa itself is now issued digitally rather than as a passport sticker. A standard single-entry tourist visa allows a 30-day stay and must be used within about 2.5 months of the application date; processing takes about 4 working days at VFS.
