Thailand's largest island, a beach and boat-trip base for Phang Nga Bay and the Phi Phi Islands.
A closer lookWhy people go
Phuket combines resort beaches like Patong and Kata with a launching point for day trips into Phang Nga Bay's limestone karst islands, including the James Bond Island made famous by the 1974 film. Longtail boat and kayak tours thread through sea caves and floating fishing villages in the bay.

Phuket Old Town preserves 19th-century Sino-Portuguese shophouse architecture along Thalang Road, now filled with cafés, street art and boutique shops. The 45-metre marble Big Buddha statue overlooks the island from a hilltop, offering 360-degree views over Kata and Chalong bays; it reopened in March 2026 after a landslide-related closure.
The Phi Phi Islands, reached by speedboat, are a common day-trip add-on for their beaches and snorkelling.
When to go
November to April, Phuket's dry, sunny high season; December–March offers the calmest seas.
