The story

On 6 August 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, the first nuclear weapon used in war, killing tens of thousands immediately and many more in the following months. The Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, close to the blast's hypocentre, was one of the few structures left standing; its skeletal dome remains preserved as the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome).

The full story

The surrounding area was rebuilt as Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, anchored by the Peace Memorial Museum, which documents the bombing through artefacts, photographs and survivor testimony. The Atomic Bomb Dome was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 5–7 December 1996 for its symbolic association with the destructive power of nuclear weapons and the hope for lasting peace.

Many visitors combine the memorial with a trip to Miyajima island, about 45 minutes away by ferry, home to the floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine.
