Kuldhara and Bhangarh FortA place with a story.
An abandoned Paliwal Brahmin village and a 16th-century fort, each wrapped in India's best-known curse legends.
A closer lookThe story
Kuldhara, about 18 km southwest of Jaisalmer, was home to Paliwal Brahmins from around the 13th century. Its population fell from roughly 1,500 in the 18th century to just 37 by 1890, and the village was fully abandoned in the early 19th century. Popular legend says residents cursed the land overnight while fleeing a minister's harassment; historians point instead to drying wells, heavy taxation, or a possible earthquake. Since 2015 it has been developed as a paid heritage tourism site.
The full story
Bhangarh Fort, in Alwar district on the edge of Sariska Tiger Reserve, was built in 1573 by Bhagwant Das for his son Madho Singh. Two competing legends explain its ruin — a sadhu's curse over a shadow falling on his hermitage, or a black-magic practitioner's curse after a princess spurned him.
Bhangarh is the only centrally protected monument in India with an official curfew: the Archaeological Survey of India has posted a notice barring entry before sunrise and after sunset, citing public safety after the site became a magnet for night-time thrill-seekers.
